Reducing devs time and efforts to configure payment routes

🙏🏻 Introduction

As businesses grew, so did their payment needs. Initially, a single gateway sufficed, but as customer expectations evolved, speed, flexibility, and reliability became essential.

The shift to multi-payment gateway setups offered more options and smoother transactions, but with it came hidden challenges. Integrating various payment aggregators meant managing different APIs and constant updates, turning a promising solution into a resource-draining task for developers. What began as a strategy for enhancing the business soon became a complex, time-consuming hurdle.

What is Hyperswitch?

A global payment platform & orchestrator for businesses of all sizes and acts as a switch for multiples processors and controls how the payment will go through

PROBLEM BREAKDOWN

🥲 So, what went wrong...

At Hyperswitch, we’ve always had a powerful payment router capability—a system that could intelligently route transactions to the best-performing gateway. However, there was a catch: developers had to manage everything through code.

This led to:

Endless Tickets For Dev

Time-Consuming Processes

Frustration on Both Sides

Endless Tickets: Every time a business needed a routing rule changed (e.g., routing high-volume transactions to a specific gateway), developers had to manually update the code.

Time-Consuming Processes: Even simple configuration changes took hours or days, slowing down business operations.

Frustration on Both Sides: Business owners felt helpless, and developers were overwhelmed with repetitive tasks.

DEEP DIVE

🏁 and, how did we start

Juspay’s existing solution

At Juspay, we were already solving the problem for Indian business so we decided to take few learnings from there and build on top of it.
But since we were building for global audience we need to understand it from our existing businesses and scale it for other countries and business

Talking to few businesses

We get a chance to talk to few merchants that we had and tried to understand how they are operating currently and their challenges

Medium scale businesses just want to manage volume

Less Dependency on developers

WHAT MARKET TELLS US

⭐️ Learning from the competitors

Before jumping into solutions, we took a step back to study the competition. We analyzed leading payment routing systems in the market, digging into their strengths and weaknesses to understand what worked—and what didn’t...

Use of conversational language format

No code workflow creation

Drag & Drop Templates

DEEP DIVE

💡 Turning ideas into action

With insights from our research, we brainstormed various solutions. We realized there were different categories of merchants, each with unique needs.

After multiple discussions with the business and product teams, we decided to focus initially on medium-scale merchants—a segment that could benefit most from our solution while allowing us to test and iterate quickly. Due to timeline constraints, we prioritized quick wins with low effort but high impact

So, initially we went ahead with volume based routing, which could help medium scale businesses and could also solve for large scale. Later we added “Advanced Configuration Routing or Rule Based Routing” with a fallback option

Volume based routing

Advance configuration routing

Default Fallback

LET’S START

🔁 Iterations... Iterations... Iterations...

So I started iterating on different ways to write a rule and based on our competitive analysis, we already had conversation based format in our minds.
Another way which we came up with is keeping all the variables type on a tools panel and let our users build it by dragging into the work area.

So it came down to Conversational rule creation vs Drag & drop based building

FINAL DESIGNS

🙃 Let’s see how we did it

As businesses grew, so did their payment needs. Initially, a single gateway sufficed, but as customer expectations evolved, speed, flexibility, and reliability became essential.

Smart payment router - Home

Merchants will be able to choose between three different options to choose between
Volume based configuration, Rule Based Configuration and Default Fallback

Default fallback will be live from the start for each merchant

Volume Based Configuration

Volume-based routing give businesses control over their payment flows. Merchants can choose multiple processor and divide transactions from each router to achieve high success rates and save costs as well. While designing, I was more focused on keeping it simple and intuitive so that a non-tech users can also achieve the goal and customise the rules.

Rule Based Configuration

We wanted merchants to feel like they had superpowers, so we added rule-based configuration. Imagine a business owner saying, “Send all card payments from the UAE to Gateway A, but use Gateway B for cash-on-delivery orders over $500.” That’s exactly what we built—a simple, dropdown-based rule builder that let merchants create custom routing rules in minutes. No coding, no confusion. Just clear, step-by-step options that made it easy to adapt to their unique needs. It was all about giving them control, without the headache

Activation of rules

After creation of rule, merchants can choose a rule to be active for routing. Default fallback will always be there to ensure an additional level of base of failure.

MEASURE

📈 Impact & Learnings

After we launched this feature, we saw a huge decrease in the number of dev tickets. Also, we saw uplift in authorisation rates and conversion rates of certain businesses. It was able to create major impact for the merchants which are live in multiple countries and have to route between different payment methods based on geolocation.

When it comes to learning, collaboration with different teams has made my life much easier and also in terms of decision making. This is just a high level description of what we have done but lets connect to talk in details and understand the impact.
